BBSRC Bioscience IT Services (BITS) is the common service provider of Information Communication Technology (ICT) services to the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and its sponsored research institutes, the Partnership.

BITS call centre

BBSRC is one of seven UK research councils (RCUK), and is the leading funding agency for academic research and training in the biosciences at universities and institutes throughout the UK.

BITS is located at the Rothamsted Research site in Harpenden, one of the BBSRC sponsored institutes.

Some of the core functions of BITS are as follows, all of which help ensure the smooth running of our services:


Provision and operation of a network of distributed computing services (AGRENET).

Operation, management and development of the core service systems.

Technical support for the operation and management of all service systems.

Provision of IT training courses.

To provide a point of contact on behalf of BBSRC for external organisations on ICT matters.

To encourage the exchange of information amongst the BBSRC IT community.
